The cleaning products industry is committed to doing its part toward a sustainable future. This includes setting ambitious goals including eliminating cleaning product packaging waste by 2040 and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Innovations in cleaning product formulation and packaging are helping make these goals more achievable and can also help consumers make more sustainable choices. Here are some things you can look for:
Concentrated Products
You may already be using these products. Laundry packets are a great example of a concentrated product that is packaged in a convenient single dose format. Or your liquid laundry may require less detergent to get the same clean. The key to look out for here is not how much volume you’re getting but how much cleaning power. The product label may say how many loads of laundry it can do to give you a better idea of value.
Refillables
Refillable products can be an easy way to cut down on plastic use while getting the same clean. There are several ways to go about this, from subscription services to pouches sold at the store. This works as long as you’re careful not to mix different cleaning products and keep them in the intended container.
Minimal/Recyclable Packaging
Your favorite products may look a little different as companies look to reduce the amount of plastic packaging and/or increase the amount of reused and recyclable packaging. Look for recycling instructions so you know how to dispose of these new containers when they’re empty.
Right-Sized Products
The most efficient packaging is not the one that holds the most product but instead the one that holds the amount of product you’re able to use before it expires, in a size that can be stored safely in your home. The most sustainable choice is making sure the product can be put to good use and not wasted.
These are just a few. Are there sustainable innovations we’ve missed here that you’re excited about? Let us know!
