Happy #AmericaRecyclesDay! The national recycling rate is currently only at 32%, so we need to do a lot more to reach the goal of circular product packaging. The good news is that recycling is something we all can do. However, it can be difficult to know how to recycle different things in different regions of the country. The more we know about how to treat recyclable materials the closer to a 100% recycling rate we can get. That’s why today we’re answering your questions about recycling household cleaners.
Can household cleaner packaging be recycled?
The answer is most often a resounding yes! Most cleaning product packaging uses plastic categorized as #1 or #2, which are the most widely recyclable types. Look for that chasing arrow symbol to be sure.
Do they need to be taking to a hazardous waste disposal site?
No, most cleaning product containers can be put out with your curbside recycling.
How should cleaning product bottles be prepared for recycling?
Check the label for recycling instructions. You may need to remove the label and other pieces like spray nozzles and then rinse out the container before recycling. Usually a cap is also recyclable and can be left on.
What if there’s still product left in the bottle?
You’ll want to use up the product before recycling the container, if you can. Otherwise, many cleaning products can be poured (on its own, not mixed with any other products) down the sink with the water running. Check the disposal instructions on the bottle label.
