After the Party: Cleaning and Disinfecting

December has traditionally brought holiday gatherings and year-end celebrations, but this has been a year like no other. COVID-19 has us rethinking the usual plans. Some get-togethers can be done virtually. For others there is no substitute for a small gathering of family and friends. If you are participating in a holiday gathering outside of your household, our tips can help keep you safe and clean:

Hosting a Party

  • Follow local public health guidelines, including limits on the number of people, mask requirements and social distancing.
  • Put hand sanitizer in easy-to-access places and set up a guest bathroom with plenty of soap for frequent handwashing. Include single-use towels for drying hands.
  • Clean surfaces before and after the event and look for ways to reduce the need for contact, like with touchless garbage cans.
  • Be careful to wash hands before and after food preparation and limit the need for guests to use shared items like serving utensils.

Attending a Party

  • Check in with the hosts. See what preparations they are making and if the event guidelines fit with your risk comfort level.
  • Arrive prepared. Have a mask in hand and bring/pack a small bottle of hand sanitizer.
  • Be careful when handling food. Parties often have finger food, which makes it especially important to practice good hand hygiene before, during and after the event.

Before hosting or attending any event this season, it can be helpful to review the CDC’s holiday celebration recommendations.
