How to Clean a Toilet

Cleaning a toilet may not be the most glamorous task. In fact, according to our cleaning surveys, it’s one of the least liked cleaning tasks. However, it’s necessary for maintaining hygiene and preventing unpleasant odors. And with a few simple steps, it can be completed effectively and efficiently.

  • Wear gloves. Cleaning a toilet can expose you to germs and bacteria, so it is important to protect yourself. After you’re done cleaning, wash or dispose of the gloves and wash your hands.
  • Gather your supplies. You will need a toilet brush, a toilet bowl cleaner, a disinfectant spray, paper towels, and a trash bag. You may also want to use a scrubbing sponge or a pumice stone for stubborn stains.
  • Flush the toilet and apply the toilet bowl cleaner. Flush the toilet to wet the bowl and then squirt the toilet bowl cleaner around the rim and inside the bowl. Make sure to cover the entire surface with the cleaner and let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
  • Scrub the bowl and flush again. Use the toilet brush to scrub the bowl thoroughly, paying attention to any stains or deposits. Make sure to reach under the rim and into the trap. Flush the toilet again and rinse the brush in the incoming water.
  • Spray the disinfectant spray on the outside of the toilet, including the seat, the lid, the tank, the base, and the handle. Wipe with paper towels and dispose of them in the trash bag. You may need to use a scrubbing sponge or a pumice stone to remove any hard water stains or mineral deposits.
  • Sanitize the toilet brush and put any paper towels in the trash. You can either soak the brush in a bleach solution for 10 minutes or spray it thoroughly with the disinfectant spray and let it air dry. Tie the trash bag securely and dispose of it in an outdoor bin.

A clean toilet will not only look better, but also smell better and prevent the spread of germs and diseases. To further prevent the spread of germs, make sure to close the lid each time you flush.
