Cleaning Advice Graduates Wish They’d Known

When it’s time for us to leave home for our first apartment or dorm room, how ready are we? And how do we gain the knowledge we need to keep that new space clean and healthy, either on our own or alongside roommates? A recent study found that most of us are not completely prepared and nearly 7 in 10 college students said they felt no more prepared than they were as freshmen. Clearly, there is a need for some cleaning 101.

When asked what skills they wish they knew when leaving home, cleaning floors, picking up after oneself, doing laundry, and doing the dishes topped the list. College seniors said they wanted this knowledge to create a relaxed, stress-free environment.

Fortunately, there are resources available to help build these cleaning skills and create that organized environment. The Class of Clean toolkit has checklists and advice on everything from doing laundry to cleaning as a conscientious roommate. There’s even a new resource listing the tasks required to keep a clean apartment for first-time renters and those living off-campus.

From removing stains to preventing illness, there are a lot of reasons to want to know how to clean. With a few tips, anyone can improve their cleaning IQ and be ready to live on their own or with roommates.
