Poison Prevention Awareness Tips

Did you know that you can call poison control for expert advice from medical specialists at one of the 55 poison centers located across the country? This resource can become a lifeline when the unthinkable happens. The third full week of March every year is National Poison Prevention Week and a time to raise awareness about poison prevention.

Like medicine, batteries, garden chemicals and toiletries, cleaning products should be stored up and out of reach of children, safely out of sight. Cleaning products are safe when used as directed but should never be ingested.

Here are three poison prevention steps that you can take this week:

  • Put the Poison Prevention Hotline number in your cell phone contacts. It’s 1-800-222-1222. If you have a pet, you may also want to add 888-426-4435, which is the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
  • Take a walk through your house and try to get down low to see what a child might find interesting or within reach. A different perspective can help uncover potential hazards.
  • Teach your children about the difference between toys and other household items. Even young kids can start learning. Our activity sheet can help.
